A good evening was had by all at Spoken Word evening at the Mortal Man Hotel, Troutbeck, yesterday evening, Thursday. Storyteller from Penrith held his audience spellbound and Proprietor, Kate was on top form, bringing a smile to all our faces. There was a small but very appreciative audience who stayed all evening to listen to our offerings. One couple from Scotland, on holiday, had driven purposely to the Mortal Man to be at the open mic event. That was very gratifying indeed.
I was there, or course, reading from WORD PIE, HOTCHPOTCH and TALL TALES. I also read a new piece of flash fiction. It's so crazy it makes me laugh.

It was a route he'd completed many times before, but today, as he proceeded into the shadowy chamber, he felt fearful. Keeping close to the wall, he moved forward with care, stopping erratically, glancing in every direction, ears open to every sound, senses alert to unfamiliar movement. If he could cheat death, even by a whisker, victory would be his, and he could feast 'til his stomach swelled.
The hairs on his neck stood straight as he approached the dazzling light. Could he cross the threshold without being detected? It was a risk he was prepared to take. Eyes shifting first left, then right, watching for signs of attack, he darted into the shining box and dashed towards the wooden tower. But before he had a chance to hide behind the tall edifice, the ground shook and a thunderous noise boomed through the atmosphere.
'Mum! Quick! It's that mouse again. I think it's hiding behind the bookcase.' NO MORE TO READ
